I have a piece in a new anthology from Soft Skull,
Awake! A Reader for the Sleepless
ABOUT
[Rose Gowen] was born in [Berkeley, CA] in [1973], [the natural] child of a good but impoverished
[Californian woman]. Proud and moody as a youth, [she] had latent power and ambition; yet for some
years after [her] graduation[s] from [Simon‘s Rock College, and The University of The Arts in
Philadelphia], [she] found no satisfactory opening for a career. [Her] situation was difficult:
[she] wished to distinguish [her]self [...], but [she didn‘t know how]; [she] was [bright enough],
but poverty hindered [her] independence of action. In addition, as a young [wo]man [s]he was slow
to find [her]self, uncertain where [her] best energies lay. [Eventually, she got over it, started
writing fiction, and found a good job.]
--adapted from John F. Ross‘s 1948 introduction to the Rhinehart & Co. edition of Gulliver‘s
Travels.
